The credit crunch has had its impact on all types of market sectors, from banking all the way through to farming, but one market that doesn’t seem to be affected, is the sale of Blu-Ray DVDs. Woolworths and Zavvi used to be two huge portals for the sales of DVDs and have since disappeared, but still, the Blu-Ray market is as strong as ever, according to
information from the British Video Association. Christmas may have inspired the sudden serge of Blu-Ray DVDs, but still according to the British Video Association a massive 1.5 million discs under the Blu-Ray format were sold in December, which is a 400% rise compared with the same period in 2007. Admittedly, the rise may be down to the HD/Blu-Ray format war which was commencing this time last year. There were two main players in the high rise in sales for the December period, in the form of two of the most
popular films of all time, The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia! The Dark Knight kicked off Blu-Ray in style, with sales totaling 281,000 copies where as Mamma Mia! Was the fastest selling DVD with 3,000,000 copies sold within the first seven days of its release, not bad!
